UTICA, NY (June 29, 2009)-This year, the GPO FCU Stanley Classic Movie series takes five disparate hits from five different decades that showcase the breadth of movie making at its finest.
This series continues the Stanley tradition of great movies every Tuesday in August. There is an epic, Ben-Hur, a tear-jerker featuring a bravura performance by Bette Davis in Dark Victory; a silly but very funny romantic comedy, Pillow Talk, an unexpectedly great movie musical in Oliver, and the series ends with a rock documentary about The Band, The Last Waltz.
Showtimes for all these movies are at 7pm beginning Tuesday August 4.
As always, the Stanley features great projection and superb sound.
In addition to the usual movie snacks on sale (popcorn, candy, soda, and water),beer and wine will be for sale.
The movie series line up:
Tuesday August 4: Ben-Hur (1959) Directed by William Wyler, starring Charlton Heston. This sprawling epic won an unprecedented 11 Academy Awards, and the galley sea fight and chariot race are both legendary feats of exciting filmmaking.
Tuesday August 11: Dark Victory (1939) Bette Davis, George Brent, Humphrey Bogart. "Is a sentimental, tragic and moving melodrama (a "weepie" or "woman's picture") from Warner Bros. studios - made in Hollywood's most famous and competitive year. The film contains an electrifying, compelling, tour de force, tear-jerking performance from its major star Bette Davis. It was a bit of a risk for the movie studio to make and publicize an intense film about a terminally-ill patient with 'prognosis negative'."-- Tim Dirks
Tuesday August 18: Pillow Talk (1959) For a complete change of pace, this very funny romantic comedy is "The first -- and best -- of the witty, well-produced sex comedies starring Doris Day and Rock Hudson" Variety Magazine.
Tuesday August 25: Oliver! (1968) The Award-winning musical adaptation of Charles Dicken's classic Oliver Twist, is the winner of 5 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Carol Reed. The movie stars Oliver Reed, Shani Wallis, and Mark Lester.
Tuesday September 1: The Last Waltz (1978) Directed by Martin Scorcese. Beginning with a title card saying "This film should be played loud!" the concert documentary is an essay on The Band's influences and their career. The group Rick Danko on bass, violin and vocals, Levon Helm on drums, mandolin and vocals, Garth Hudson on keyboards and saxophone, Richard Manuel on keyboards, percussion and vocals, and guitarist-songwriter Robbie Robertson started out in the late 1950s as a rock and roll band led by Ronnie Hawkins, and Hawkins himself appears as the first guest. The group backed Bob Dylan in the 1960s, and Dylan performs with The Band towards the end of the concert.
(The Levon Helm Band is the first performance as part of the 2009-2010 Stanley Center Series).
All movies are at 7pm; tickets are $5 each. FLiX TiX 5 admissions for $15 are now on sale. The five admissions can be used in any combination for any of these five movies.
This series of movies is sponsored by GPO Federal Credit Union.
