UTICA, NY (August 12, 2009) -The award-winning production of Oliver! will be shown 7pm Tuesday August 25 as the next offering of the GPO Federal Credit Union Stanley Summer Movie Series.
The last G-rated movie musical since 1968 to win an Academy Award for Best Picture, Oliver! is based on the long-running Broadway musical, which in turn is based on the Charles Dickens classic Oliver Twist.
Oliver Twist is an orphan who escapes the orphanage and ends up in London working for Bill Syke's gang of young pickpockets. Featuring memorable music by Lionel Bart including "Who Will Buy", "As Long as He Needs Me", "Food, Glorious Food", and "You've Got to Pick a Pocket or Two".
Oliver! won Six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and a special award for Onna White for her spectacular choreography.
Roger Ebert gave Oliver! 5 stars and raved, Sir Carol Reed's Oliver! is a treasure of a movie. It is very nearly universal entertainment, one of those rare films like The Wizard of Oz that appeals in many ways to all sorts of people. It will be immediately exciting to the children&because of the story and the unforgettable Dickens characters. Adults will like it for the sweep and zest of its production. And as a work of popular art, it will stand the test of time& It is as well-made as a film can be.
The reviewer from TIME Magazine wrote, "The viewer is most happily greeted by Onna White's choreography, an exuberant step-by-step exploration of Victorian zeal.
The movie lasts two and a half hours. Showtime is 7pm Tuesday August 25, 2009 at the Stanley, 259 Genesee Street, downtown Utica.
